PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

The Demeter House, a 20-bed home located in Arlington, Virginia, serves women, including those who are expecting, have custody of their children or the ability to regain custody following successful treatment.

The program is designed to not only break the cycle of addiction, but empower clients to re-enter the community as responsible citizens and reduce their reliance on government support.

To meet the special needs of women, treatment is comprehensive and based on a disease model approach. Typically, treatment runs for about three months, through length of stay is based on an individual's progress and clinical condition. Certified counselors employ a traditional 12-step model based on Alcoholics and Narcotics Anonymous and individual and group counseling. Counseling is behavior management-focused, with each client learning how to assume personal responsibility for her recovery.

Our program also address the social and family barriers that have traditionally prevented mothers from entering and remaining in treatment. Up to two children, ages 12 and younger, can live with their mother while she is in treatment.

Family services

Supervised childcare is provided while mothers participate in treatment activities. At all other times, children are in the care of their mothers. Giving mothers the opportunity to learn how to care for their children in a homelike setting is one of the objectives of Demeter House.
